Gurbani Keertan & Tabla

keertan-class2Gurmat Sangeet or Keertan is the practise of singing Gurbani (Guru’s word), either with or without the use of instruments. At Guru Nanak Academy, not only is this training provided, but the value of keertan in devotional worship for the reciter (ਕੀਰਤਨੀ) and listener (ਸਰੋਤਾ) is also stressed. Shabads are taught from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Sri Dasam Granth, Bhai Gurdaas Ji’s compositions, and Bhai Nand Lal Ji’s compositions. Furthermore, a number of skilled sevaadars participate to ensure that the students receive an enriched learning experience. With Guru Ji’s blessing, we incorporate traditional instruments that were originally used to sing Gurbani. At the same time, there is an increased emphasis on singing shabads in nirdharat raags (specified musical notes) used to evoke the emotions that our Gurus intended for the purpose of understanding the Shabad.

Guru Nanak Academy is proud to offer keertan classes for the following classical instruments:
